Child custody issues can be some of the most contentious during a divorce in Missouri and elsewhere. Parents simply want what is best for their children, but there may be disagreements on just what that is.
In the past, child custody has been fairly straight forward, but today it appears that parents have more stipulations surrounding religion, education and discipline among other things.
A couple who was married for 14 years was always able to find ways to celebrate each other's faiths with their children. The mother is Jewish, and the father is Catholic. However, after they divorced it was very clearly written that neither could speak negatively about the other's religion. They were also not allowed to participate in activities that made the children feel they were a part of a designated faith group.
Although the detailed stipulations seem strange or unnecessary to some, others say that specific terms prevent future arguments, and help to limit confusion for children.
When couples are going through a divorce, it can be an emotional time period. It can be even more emotional when children are involved. After a divorce, children must adapt to their new life. It is for that reason that it is important to create a child custody plan that is not only fair for the parents, but also gives children the best chance at future success.
Missouri parents who are facing divorce may wish to consult with an attorney. An attorney can help sort out child custody matters while also fighting for their client's rights.
